Upgrade from 32 to 64
Cheers, -Ali thanks for the info. but why MIPS/SPARC/POWER could run both 32-bit and 64-bit executable without any problem only Intel has the performace issue?? is it because RISC and CISC machines implement their ISA differently, one uses fixed length intruction set and another (CISC) uses variable-length

Windows XP 64-bit runs 32-bit apps 8% faster than Windows XP ...
Does the 32 vs 64 issue have anything at all to do with applications (if they run under 32 bit, will they run under 64bit?) Pretty much. A 64-bit CPU does not perform arithmetic instructions any faster than 32-bit CPU. 1 cycle = 1 cycle...period. And the time it takes for 1 cycle is determined by clock rate.

AMD has positioned the K7 in anticipation of a migration to 64 bit PC computing and rumour has it that they are technically prepared. AMD is pretty much 64 bit ready? Sorry but this is nonsense. AMD only makes IA-32 (ie x86) based processors. IA-32 is most definitely a 32 bit instruction set architecture.

I have XP x64, and have no compatibility problems, so I would have no hesitations with upgrading to vista 64 over 32 - however, I can only get the 32 bit version from my college using the huge discount. -n32 versus -32 (was Re: Will there be a 64 bit...?)
Windows NT is undeniably an operating system restricted to 32-bits of address space. In dealing with the hardware, compilers will sign-extend 32-bit addresses before using them in a 64-bit context. The operating system vendor (Microsoft) is intent on maintaining compatibility with other platforms for application

I understand that it uses a 32-bit kernel. However, I'm curious as to how much of the 64-bit capabilities the Indigo2 is able to take advantage of. Also, why does the system use a 32-bit kernel, and is it possible to have a 64-bit kernel on the IP22s? There are two ways a computer can be "64-bit".

What I thought I could buy to develop and run 32 and 64 bit binaries was not really what I wanted. Oh, the J2240 _can_ do both, it's just much slower than the others listed, and might be significantly more expensive than a C240, the C being single-processor... Other than that, it's just fine.
